ICCNZ Member, Frances Davies of the International Art Centre, advises that with over 36 resident artists currently completing a multitude of exciting new works, the annual Summer Exhibition promises to be one of the best ever.

New to the gallery this year, and featured in the Summer Exhibition, are the unique neo-classical portraits of Oamaru based artist, Donna Demente. Whilst for the first time in New Zealand, clients are able to view and purchase the 'edgy' animal portraits of Melbourne artist Tracy Ellerton. On a more traditional level, Patricia Payne commemorates the festive season with a specially commissioned Nativity Scene accompanied by a new series of small scale paintings, perfect for a very special Christmas gift.

This year the every popular landscapes of leading New Zealand artist, Simon Williams, are complemented by his dramatic new series of Auckland Nightscapes.

Italia vs France Mid-Summer Dance Party

Once again, the boys from ITALIANZ (Emanuele & Alfio) bring another event to the Auckland region!

In collaboration with Auckland Accueil, ITALIANZ presents the Mid-Summer Dance Party. The French band, Club Manouche, will fight through musical notes against Italian DJ, Luca Napolitano, aka Randal - the weapons involved will be guitars, CDs, microphones, drums and a lot of live music.

On the Italian side there will be free ciabatta and focaccia bread offered by Pukeko Bakery and, on the French side, petits fours offered by Panetton Bakery, to feed the crazy dancers during the night.

Last, but not least, the battlefield will be the legendary Khuja Lounge, 536 Queen Street, Auckland. Everyone is very welcome to join the event and remember, entry is from 8pm! Tickets on sale at the door ($10) on Thursday the 20th of August.

Citi swings axe to restructure Italian business

Citigroup is looking to sell - or failing that, to close - its private banking business in Italy and is to reduce its presence in the country by about half.

The move, part of the US banking group's global restructuring programme, is expected to see the number of people employed in Italy fall from 1,000 to about 500 by the end of this year, with most of the job losses coming in its Italian consumer finance business. That unit, which has 65 branches round the country, is being closed.

Citigroup's scaling down in Italy represents a dramatic shift in policy for the bank, which expanded rapidly round the world in the past decade.

But it is consistent with its strategy of shrinking its balance sheet and divesting itself of non-core assets as it tries to revive its fortunes after suffering billions of dollars of losses during the global financial crisis.

Citigroup has held talks with Banco Santander of Spain, among others, about selling its Italian private business, which has assets of about €2bn ($2.8bn) under management and is considered too small to be competitive. If the bank cannot find a buyer, it is expected to close the unit.

Once the restructuring has been completed, Citigroup's business in Italy will be concentrated on corporate and investment banking and global transaction services.

Two years ago it sold its retail banking unit to Credem, an Italian bank. Citigroup has also sold its Milan headquarters, in a sale and leaseback deal.

Sergio Ascolani, Citigroup's head of banking in Italy, told the Financial Times: "It's absolutely rational, with current markets, to exit from businesses that are marginal and invest in areas where Citi is globally strong." He added: "We're not exiting Italy, just rationalising here."

Citigroup is one of the chief casualties of the global financial crisis and is under intense pressure to restructure and shrink after using hundreds of billions of US taxpayer dollars to prop itself up.

It is expected to finalise the sale of a 34% stake to the US government as part of its latest bail-out.

In January, Citigroup placed $650bn-worth of non-core assets and businesses into a separate division with a view to selling them or winding them down.

The new unit, called Citi Holdings, includes the bank's US consumer finance operations, about half of its credit card business and most of the toxic mortgage-backed securities that caused most of Citi's losses. On Friday, Citi created a special board committee to oversee Citi Holdings and monitor the disposal of its assets.

News Corp. subsidiary, Fox Channels Italy, on Monday announced plans for a new satellite channel called Fox Retro, providing an outlook for nostalgic lovers of mostly US programming from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

The channel, which will air on News Corp's Sky-Italia Network, will focus on programming to include "Charlie's Angels", "Mission Impossible", "Mork and Mindy", "The Love Boat", "The Jeffersons", and others that air during what the company called "the Golden Era of Television".

The man, 68, fired five shots from his revolver into his frozen PC. Relatives called the police after hearing the man’s shouts of rage and the bursts of gunfire. He was taken to a police station but later released. The gun was confiscated.

Fiat and Chrysler Officially Hook Up

Italy's Fiat and Detroit No.3 Chrysler have made their partnership official and created the foundation for what the Italian automaker hopes will become a global player.

"This is an important day not only for Chrysler and its staff, who have gone through a long period of uncertainty, but also for the entire automobile industry" said Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, who will now take over the same job at Chrysler. The two automakers were able to finalise their alliance after the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday, in a unanimous decision, rejected a challenge to Fiat's takeover of the American automaker.

The challenge had been lodged by a group of pension funds in the state of Indiana, which hold $42 million of bankrupt Chrysler`s $6.9 billion debt, or less than 1%. The alliance with Fiat will allow Chrysler to pull out of bankruptcy protection and qualify for federal bail-out funds. The American automaker's key assets will be placed in a new company, Chrysler Group, which will be owned by Fiat, an auto workers union trust fund and the American and Canadian governments.

"Chrysler's activities which will be part of the new company and are or will soon be operative and work is already underway to develop high-quality, fuel- efficient green vehicles" Marchionne said. "Based on Chrysler's innovative mentality and Fiat's technology and know-how, we intend to expand the portfolio of Chrysler's products in North America and elsewhere," he added.

Fiat, through its auto division, will initially have a 20% stake and management control of the American automaker in exchange for its cutting-edge green and small car technology, as well as access to Fiat's sales and service networks in Europe and Latin America. The stake will rise to 35% once benchmarks are met in the US, including producing Fiat and Alfa Romeo models in Chrysler plants.

It can increase its stake to over 50% once federal loans have been repaid. Aside from Marchionne, Fiat will have two other members on the new board, four will be nominated by the US Treasury, one by the Canadian government and one by the unions. Former Borden Chemical and Duracell chairman C. Robert Kidder is expected to be appointed chairman. In his role as Chrysler CEO, Marchionne is expected to overhaul the company's management and operating structure in much the same way as he successfully did after he joined a near-bankrupt Fiat in 2004.

Italian Soccer Tournament in Auckland

Chamber members, Alfio Leotta and Emanuele Barbieri (ITALIANZ Event Management), are hosting yet another event for members and local Italians in Auckland. This time it's an Italian Table Soccer Tournament, which will consist of teams named after the Serie A squads - Milan, Inter, Juventus, Napoli etc.

The event is being sponsored by Toshi (an Italian brand of alcohol beverages) and Sovrano (an Italian caffe).

The winning team will win $150 to spend at Sovrano, second prize is $75 to be spent at Sovrano and third prize is a bottle of Toshi.

Forbes stated: Over the past 20 years the government has transformed NZ from an agrarian economy dependent on concessionary British market access to a more industrialised, free market economy that can compete globally. This dynamic growth has boosted real incomes - but left behind some at the bottom of the ladder - and broadened and deepened the technological capabilities of the industrial sector.

Per capita income has risen for nine consecutive years and reached $28,500 in 2008 in purchasing power parity terms. Debt-driven consumer spending drove robust growth in the first half of the decade, helping fuel a large balance of payments deficit that posed a challenge for economic managers. Inflationary pressures caused the central bank to raise its key rate steadily from Jan 2004 until it was among the highest in the OECD in 2007/08; international capital inflows attracted to the high rates further strengthened the currency and housing market, however, aggravating the current account deficit.

The economy fell into recession in 2008, and in line with global peers, the central bank has cut interest rates aggressively; the new government is responding with plans to raise productivity growth and develop infrastructure.

European Opera Tour

La Festa della Repubblica is celebrated in Italy on the second of June each year.

The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. With 12,717,923 votes for a republic and 10,719,284 for the monarchy, the male descendants of the House of Savoy were sent into exile.

To commemorate it, a grand military parade is held in central Rome, presided by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, in the role of Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, and other authorities attend too. Prior to the foundation of the Republic, the Italian national day was the first Sunday in June, anniversary of the granting of the Statuto Albertino.

In 1997, on the bicentenary of the adoption of the first Italian tricolour, 7 January was declared Festa del Tricolore; it is intended as a celebration, though not a public holiday.

Italian Ambassador to New Zealand, HE Gioacchino Trizzino graciously hosted a reception in honour of the visit of Deputy Minister for Economic Development Adolfo Urso and delegation to Wellington.

Aperitivo Italiano

On the 1st of April, an Aperitivo Italiano was organized by the Società Dante in collaboration with ICCNZ, ItaliaNZ (Emanuele Barbieri and Alfio Leotta) and Khuja Lounge.

A successful event attended by 65 people. All parties did their best to promote the “Made in Italy” brand along with the screening of an episode from the popular Italian TV Series, “Gli arancini di Montalbano” – an intriguing detective story set in the backdrop of the glorious Sicilian landscape.

Khuja Lounge has also announced that they will be holding an Italian dance party at the Lounge on Thursday, 28th of June. More details to follow.

The Annual Festival Italia

On Sunday, 22nd of March, the ICCNZ attended, as a stall holder, the annual Festival Italia held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Wellington. Board members Sonja Cabrera, Owen McKernon, Fiona Birkbeck and President, Mario Leonti manned the stall throughout the day and distributed large amounts of brochures and advertising material belonging to Chamber members to the visiting public.

The Festival was attended by huge crowds of Wellingtonians and, this year, ICCNZ also held a Business Card Draw with the prizes being bottles of Nero D’Avola, an excellent red wine from Sicily. The winners were: Sue O’Shea, Ross Fenton, Val Parsons, Julene Hope, Barry Ellis and Estelle Cook. Congratulations!

Annual General Meeting 2009

On Tuesday, 24th of February 2009, the Annual General Meeting of the Chamber was held at La Bella Italia on The Terrace, Wellington.

The Councillors for 2009 were elected as follows: Mario Leonti (President), Liz Maxwell (Co-Vice President), Antonio Cacace (Co-Vice President), Fiona Birkbeck (Treasurer), Sonja Cabrera, Michael Stephens, Owen McKernon, Annette Scullion, Carol Wisker and John Dennett.

Ambassador Trizzino spoke about opportunities for the Chamber to be involved with an upcoming Ministerial visit in April and the stand that the Embassy have taken at the Fieldays in Hamilton, which the Chamber is welcome to have a presence on.

On Wednesday 3rd December 2008, 70 members, along with their guests, friends and supporters of ICCNZ and representatives and guests of the Italian Embassy in Wellington, travelled from near and far to gather at La Bella Italia in Petone for a delightful evening.

Sincere thanks to Cav. Antonio Cacace of La Bella Italia, who generously provided the venue, great staff and a memorable dinner experience. Thanks also to ICCNZ member Sur, for selecting some marvellous Italian wines to accompany the dinner.

H.E. Gioacchino Trizzino, Ambassador to New Zealand kindly accepted our invitation to attend the dinner and be our guest speaker. The dinner was also the occasion to introduce Dott. Luca de Leonardis, International Business Consultant, who has recently arrived from Italy. Luca has worked closely with ICCNZ in recent years and has a number of exciting projects in the pipeline.

ICCNZ Trip To Europe

ICCNZ President, Mario Leonti, conducted several meetings to foster relationships with diplomatic, political and business institutions. Dott. Luca De Leonardis organized meetings for him in Rome, Modena, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Forli, Treviso, Milano, Val Di Comino, Frosinone, San Gimignano, Siena, Torino and Mondova with very promising results.

They introduced the idea of New Zealand becoming a hub for Italy in the South Pacific reaching as far as Chile, China and Singapore. The concept was very well received.

In Rome they met with the NZ Ambassador, Laurie Markes and had a very enjoyable lunch with him. They discussed ways of assisting medium to small NZ businesses develop markets in Italy and of raising the quality of service in the NZ tourist industry. Dott. De Leonardis also arranged an introduction to Dott. Antonio Romano of Assocamerestero, in charge of the Network of Italian Chambers of Commerce worldwide. Dott. Romano was encouraging about the likelihood of ICCNZ being accepted by Assocamerestero and offered many useful suggestions to strengthen our eligibility. In Emilia-Romagna ICCNZ member Ascor Chimici very generously hosted us at the Castle of Diegaro. We much enjoyed their justly famed hospitality and cuisine. We also met with Sig. Valentini, owner and founder of Ascor Chimici and were shown over their facilities by their Export Area Manager Sig. Pandolfini. It was lovely meeting them again and hearing of the successful outcomes of the meetings ICCNZ organized for them in NZ in 2007.

Their next visit was to the Chamber of Commerce of Modena to meet with Sig. Zanni, Director of Promec and Signora Bisi Manager for Asia Africa and Oceania, exploring possible cooperation. They had a dinner meeting near Treviso with Dott.ssa Lucy Kuzminowa, Manager of Internship and International Projects of the University Ca' Foscari of Venice. We discussed the possibility of interns from the university coming to ICCNZ.

The next morning they went on to Parma for a meeting with Dott. Andrea Zanlari, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Parma and of the Combined Chambers of Emilia-Romagna, who treated us to a beautiful lunch at the prestigious restaurant La Greppia. They discussed the participation of NZ delegates to Italian Trade Fairs such as the important local fair CIBUS, of delegations to NZ with presentation and tasting of regional products, and of a Mission from the Parma Chamber headed by President Zanlari to see the country and evaluate joint projects and possible investments combining Italian high technology with NZ prime materials. They also discussed the possibility of organizing educational projects for young New Zealanders and Dott. Zanlari offered to arrange a visit to the Alma International School of Italian Cooking in Colorno. Reggia di Colorno - ALMA He also organized a very interesting visit to the SLEGA prosciutto factory in Langhirano where they were shown around by one of the owners, Sig. Massimo Borchini.

The following day they had a meeting with NZ Consul Bruce Gadd and his staff in Milan. They organized a business lunch with some of the companies who had been on a Trade Mission to NZ, including Dott. Beretta of Coldiretti and Dott.ssa Magro of Agriteam.

After lunch they continued our meeting at the NZ Consulate. They discussed collaborating with Dott.ssa Fara of Future Film Festival Production House and Marcello Hinxman-Allegri of NZTE. The Consul and I both expressed a strong interest in a NZ representation at the wine fair, Vin Italy, organized by ICCNZ member Verona Fiere, and agreed to cooperate on related events.

In the evening they visited the Fiera del Mobile di Milano and spoke to Mr David Trubridge, furniture & lighting designer and Ms Clare Mora of Essenze, marketers of NZ artists abroad.

The following day the Consul invited us to accompany him on a visit to Jeffrey Chilcott, a New Zealander and the Cellarmaster for Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy in Barbaresco for a wine tasting of some of the best wines of Piemonte and a delightful lunch.

In Mondovi, Piedmont, in relation to proposed major road works in NZ, Mario Leonti met with Dott. Vinai of Conicos one of the largest road makers of Italy whose company, Codelfa was involved in tunnelling for the hydro works near Turangi.

In May Leonti and De Leonardis were lucky to be pampered guests of ICCNZ member Hotel Villa Grancassa of San Donato Val di Comino, Lazio. Their hospitality was exceptional. They discussed ways to encourage New Zealanders to visit Monte Cassino, Roma and Naples from the base of their superb facilities, in tranquil surroundings near the stunning Abbruzzi Lazio e Molise National Park. They organized a meeting with Dott. Mario Papetti, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Frosinone, and members of the Council. This was followed by a meeting with Dott. Leopoldo Papetti and Dott.ssa Barbara Zorzin of the Consorzio Turistico Terre Ciociare to foster bilateral tourism.

A few days later they had a delicious lunch as guests of another ICCNZ member, Hotel Sovestro near San Gimignano, Siena. Sig. Failli, the owner, organized a meeting with Dott. Borri President of the Associazione Industriali della Provincia di Siena. After various follow up meetings in May, Dott. De Leonardis organized further meetings for me in June.

They met again with the NZ Consul in Milano for further discussions on Vin Italy 2009. ICCNZ member Sig. Barbieri introduced us to a group of businessmen from Milano who are planning to invest in a permanent "Made in Italy" Exhibition Pavilion in New Zealand and have offered their existing building, Revel, in the centre of Milano to New Zealand businesses wanting to showcase their products in Europe. With Sig. Galvan they also discussed the export and distribution of electronic products in NZ.

They returned to San Gimignano and Siena where they discussed projects relating to tourism and to the importation of furniture into NZ. Hotel Sovestro is interested in collaborating to promote the Province of Siena, offering their hotel as a centre for New Zealanders visiting Toscana. Our final visits were in Parma.

They met with Sig. Tanzi who is interested in developing a centre of excellence in NZ for the South East Pacific, seeing the 2011 Rugby World Cup in NZ as giving it additional momentum. With President Andrea Zanlari of the Camera di Commercio di Parma they had further talks on joint projects in the near future. He brought us for a very interesting visit to the Alma cooking school. They expressed a strong interest in enrolling NZ students in their courses and invited the cooperation of ICCNZ. President Zanlari asked us to give a presentation on the activities of ICCNZ to a forum of exporters including Confindustria, Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano e Consorzio per Prosciutto di Parma. The event was a great success.

Lastly, the ICCNZ President met with President Ferruccio Dardanello, of the Chamber of Commerce of Cuneo, Piemonte, who was very interested in collaboration and in an investigative visit to NZ.

Ascor Chimici Trade Visit to New Zealand

The Italian Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand was asked by ICCNZ member Ascor Chimici, a large Italian Company that operates in the area of Animal Health and Nutrition, to help them find a distributor in New Zealand.

The founder and owner, Sig Valentini, and Sig Pandolfini, their international marketing manager, were in the country from 15 to 23 October. Together with ICCNZ President Mario Leonti they met with several major players in the NZ market selected for them by ICCNZ: Chemiplas, Ethical Agents, NRM, Stockguard, Agrifeeds and Animal Health Centre in Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton and Morrinsville. Their mission was very well received and New Zealand companies are placing orders right now.

Ascor Chimici is planning a yearly presence at Fieldays from 2008. Upon their return to Italy, Sig. Valentini, Sig Pandolfini, Director Dall'ara and Scientific Coordinator Cavassini of Ascor Chimici, met with ICCNZ consultant Dr Luca De Leonardis to discuss possibilities of bilateral trade between Italian and New Zealand companies that will enhance the visibility of ICCNZ in Italy.
